What is Welcome Week?
Welcome Week is a program that aides new students in their transition to Creighton. Each student is placed in a group with other new students lead by two upper class Welcome Week Leaders. The Welcome Week leaders will be mentors for the new students and guide them through Welcome Week’s 10 days of activities.
Does Welcome Week cost anything?
No, all Welcome Week programs are free excluding the O! The Possibilities Tours, which cost $5. Students that sign up to go on these tours will have the opportunity to visit local attractions such as the Omaha Zoo and the Old Market.
Why should I attend Welcome Week events?
Welcome Week is one of the best opportunities for new students to meet each other. Many students find their closest friends in their Welcome Week groups and many use their Leaders as great contacts for any questions throughout their first year. Welcome Week events allow students to not only learn about Creighton but also feel part of the Creighton family. Welcome Week provides students with campus resources and truly helps ease students in their transition.
What is the Ratio Studiorum?
Within three undergraduate colleges, students will be introduced to Creighton University’s Ratio Studiorum or Plan of Study in this one-credit letter-graded course. Led by a Faculty Preceptor and Decurion, the course will cover such topics as the Ratio Studiorum at Creighton, the value of a liberal arts education, academic and student integrity, obstacles to learning, and learning strategies. The students will read a book selected by the Faculty Preceptor that addresses self-exploration and self-discovery. Each RSP section has a Faculty Preceptor who facilitates class and acts as an advisor until the new students declare their major(s). There will also be a Decurion, a junior or senior who helps facilitate classroom activities and teaches three lessons independently. A Decurion acts as a peer academic leader who helps new students answer any questions about Creighton or college life they may have. Depending on the school or college the student is enrolled in there is the possibility of a sophomore leader helping as well, called a Beadle.
How do I know which Ratio Studiorum class I am in?
Each college places its respective students in Ratio Studiorum sections before fall registration takes place. When the new students come to campus they will receive a reminder as to which group they are in for the following week’s activities. On Saturday, August 23, 2008, the new students will have their first Ratio meeting with their Decurion, Preceptor, and Welcome Week leaders who will guide them through the duration of Welcome Week. The locations for these meetings can be found in the Welcome Brochure in the Move-In Packet you will receive when you arrive on campus.
How do I know what Welcome Week Group I will be in?
The Welcome Week Groups are the same as the Ratio Studiorum section.
What do I need to do to prepare for move-in?
You will receive a Move-In Packet in July that will contain essential Welcome Week information including a family and student schedule for Saturday, August 23, directions to Creighton, parking directions for move-in, information on the move-in process and how to pack, as well as a Family Handbook.
The most important thing in preparing for move-in is to have everything labeled with the student’s name, hall and room number before coming to campus. There will be hundreds of new students moving into the residence halls which make the labels essential. Welcome Week Leaders will be moving in your items for you so please try to pack items in manageable boxes that can be lifted up flights of stairs. If you are coming arriving alone, please check into the room and unlock it before you wait in line to be unloaded as there must always be someone with the car.
What should I bring to Creighton?
Although roommates should discuss with each other “who is bringing what” to their residence hall room, the following are suggestions that the Department of Residence Life has identified as possibilities to consider.
