FREEMAN AWARDS FOR STUDY ABROAD IN ASIA (FREEMAN-ASIA) UNDERGRADUATE STUDY
Am I Eligible?
Applicants for the Freeman-Asia scholarship must:
- Be United States citizens or permanent resident at the time of application.
- Currently receive need-based Financial Aid or demonstrate through FAFSA a verifiable need for financial assistance to study abroad in Asia.
- Be undergraduate students in good standing, seeking first bachelor’s degree at an institution of higher education in the United States.
- Have at least one term of enrollment remaining at their home institutions following their return from the study in Asia.
- Have applied or have been accepted to a country-based study abroad program from among the following countries and regions: Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
- Have applied or been accepted to a study abroad program that awards academic credits through the home campus or other U.S. accredited college or university.
- Have little or no previous experience in the country in which they plan to study.
- Submit an on-line Study Abroad Survey to IIE within 1 month after their return to the United States, summarizing their experiences.
- Return their Final Service Reports on the implementation of their service projects at the end of the term following the study abroad program in Asia.
What Will I Receive?
Eligible study abroad programs must be a minimum of 8 weeks for a summer term, 10 weeks for a quarter term, and 12 weeks for a semester term.
Freeman-ASIA Award benefits are determined by the eligibility of the program and the financial need of the grantee. The table below lists the Freeman-ASIA Award amounts for the following terms of study:
Summer Program | $3,000 |
Semester/Quarter Program | $5,000 |
Academic Year Program | $7,000* |
*Award amount may be adjusted should the recipient receives additional financial assistance not reported at time of application.
Please note: If program costs are less than the award amount (or covered by existing financial aid) recipients can use the Freeman-ASIA Award funds to cover related expenses such as airfare, living costs, books, etc.

How do I apply?
The application for this scholarship is available online and includes: student form, details of study abroad program, endorsement by Study Abroad advisor, statement of financial need and statement from Financial Aid advisor, personal statement, summary of any previous experience in Asia, and service proposal.

Spring 2007 & Early Academic Year 2007-08 Awards
Creighton deadline for review by Scholarships advisor: October 6th
Application Cycle opens on September 7, 2005 and deadline is October 21, 2005
Additional Information:
The primary goal of Freeman-ASIA is to increase the number of American undergraduate students who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need.
Freeman-ASIA Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities.
