Women and Religion Topic Of Lecture

Maria Massi-Dakake, Ph.D., will present “The Religious Lives of Muslim Women” at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 13, in Hixson-Lied Science Center room G4 on Creighton University’s campus. This event is free and open to the public.

The lecture is a part of The Sixth Annual Women and Religion Lecture sponsored by the Kripke Center for the study of Religion and Society and Creighton University. Dakake is associate professor of Religious Studies at George Mason University where she teaches courses on Islam and other Near Eastern religious traditions, as well as courses on women in religion. Her research interests lie in the fields of Islamic theology, philosophy, and mysticism, with particular interest in Shi‘ite and Sufi traditions and in women’s issues.

Dakake’s most recent book on the intellectual formation of the early Shi‘ite community is titled “The Charismatic Community: Shi‘ite Identity in Early Islam.” She is currently part of an editorial team compiling a study Qur’an, including extensive commentary on the text, and is working individually on a book about the lives and spiritual devotions of women mystics in Islam.
