Jesuit Author Shares Experiences with Refugees

The Rev. Gary Smith, S. J., author of “They Come Back Singing,” will discuss his life and experiences living with Sudanese refugees in the camps of Northern Uganda at Creighton University on Tuesday, April 8, at 7 p.m. in Rigge Science Building, Room 120.

His book, with its stories about service to these refugees, was the center of a campus Lentan book club and a global reading group through the Creighton University online Ministry website, http://www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent-with-Refugees/. People around the world visited the website to share with the book’s readers their insights and reflections.

“Father Smith is a powerful and gifted storyteller, who weaves a revealing tale that draws the reader into this amazing journey of faith and mission,” said the Rev. Andy Alexander, S. J., vice president for University Ministry.

“It changed the Lent prayers of many people around the world who either read the book along with the reading group or who simply read the sharing and prayed with it during Lent,” said Maureen McCann Waldron, associate director of the Collaborative Ministry Office.

The event, sponsored by the Collaborative Ministry Office and the Deglman Center for Ignatian Spirituality, is free and open to the public.
