Petition to End Affirmative Action Topic of Discussion at Creighton University

“The Petition to End Affirmative Action in Nebraska” is the topic of a discussion from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1, in Creighton University’s V.J. and Angela Skutt Student Center Ballroom.

The event is free and open to the public.

Tim Wise, author of “Little White Lies: The Truth About Affirmative Action and ‘Reverse Discrimination,’ ” and Creighton University Law Professor R. Collin Mangrum will discuss the constitutional and sociological issues of Affirmative Action, as well as what other states have done.

Nebraska is one of five states being targeted by the California group Super Tuesday for Equal Rights. A state group called the Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative is leading the petition drive here.

The proposed amendment to the Nebraska Constitution would bar "preferential treatment to any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education or public contracting."

Similar proposals have passed in Washington and Michigan.
