Gold Humanism Honor Society 2008

On March 12, 2008, the Creighton Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society inducted its fourth class of student, resident, and faculty members. The Gold Humanism Honor Society is a national honor society that annually recognizes those medical students and physicians who display the outstanding qualities of humanism, humane conduct, and professionalism in their professional and personal lives. As a part of the events at the evening induction ceremony, Dr. Joseph Lynch provided an inspiring commentary on humanism in medicine. Dr. Lynch, who is one of Creighton University's own, has throughout his long career epitomized the qualities of the humanistic physician including initially organizing and then directing the medical programs associated with Creighton University's ILAC program.

Thirteen students, six residents, and three faculty were formally inducted into the Honor Society, throughout medical school, residency, and practice of medicine.  Students inducted are:  Elizabeth Adams, Ryan Basham, Jason Beste, Justin Birge, Andrew Cleary, Anna Cook, Ryan Finlayson, Dominic Gomez-Leonardelli, G. Peter Graham, Andrew Kummer, Mary Skrypek, Jacob Smeltzer, and Dawn Tanner.  Residents inducted are past winners of the Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Awards and include:  Michael Coffey, M.D., Erin Evans, M.D., Robert Lindau, M.D., Tony Ning, M.D., Hemant Satpathy, M.D., and Sami Zeineddine, M.D.  Faculty inducted are:  Thomas Hansen, M.D., Frederick Youngblood, M.D., and Bruce Houghton, M.D. who was the 2007 recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, also sponsored by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

Inductees were presented with a specially designed lapel pin, a commemorative plaque, and a certificate signed by Cam E. Enarson, M.D., MPH, dean of the School of Medicine and vice president for the Health Sciences, and Jordan J. Cohen, M.D., chairman of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation and president emeritus of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Members of the Honor Society exemplify the qualities of the humanistic healer, manifesting integrity, compassion, and altruism, as well as the promotion of justice and respect for all human beings.  These principles mesh completely with the Ignatian philosophy of Creighton University by recognizing “men and women for others” via their induction into this Society.
