In certain situations it may be possible to offer the proband and other family members DNA testing to determine who actually has the genetic mutation causing the cancer in their family. Counseling about the benefits, risks and limitations of the testing will be provided so that an informed decision can be made about how to proceed. Anxiety about one's future fate may be relieved and unnecessary screening procedures may be avoided for those who do not have the cancer prone mutation. Those who have the mutation may utilize that information in making prudent decisions about recommended screening protocols, prophylactic surgeries, or other preventive methods.
Recommendations and Education
Recommendations for cancer screening and information about preventive measures will be discussed with those who have a high risk for cancer. Those who are at low risk, will be educated about the screening protocols recommended for the general population. Summary letters will be sent to the proband and, with permission to the primary physician who will be providing that individual's ongoing care.
