Faculty Development Offered Next Week:

Generational Differences: Implications for Teachers and Learners
International Association of Medical Science Educators Web Seminar
Presenter:  Paul McLeod, M.D.
Date:    Wednesday, April 23
Time:    11:00 a.m. to Noon (note new time for the spring series)
Location: Medical Education Conference Room, 455 Criss III
Lunch provided – RSVP to catepogge@creighton.edu

Session Description:  The topic “generational differences” has received the interest of medical educators throughout the continuum of medical education.  As many as four generational groups may be simultaneously present in medical education settings (e.g., Grand Rounds). This session will increase our understanding of the values and behaviors of different generational groups that have implications for teachers and learners during the educational process. Understanding of generational differences can help establish common ground on which to build a foundation for positive relationships not only between teachers and learners but also among colleagues.

NOTE: This web seminar will be available online at a later date, and, when there is interest in the topic, IAMSE web seminars will be presented again at the CUMC.

Upcoming Programs and Events:

Title:                Cognitive Style and Leadership: Optimizing Your Role in Shared Leadership

Presenter:       Lynn Curry, Ph.D.

Program Description: Organizational health and success depends fundamentally on the quality of shared leadership.  That means regardless of the title we bear, we have a responsibility to our organization and to our colleagues in that organization to help it be a healthy place to work and to succeed in its organizational mission.  This shared obligation for leadership is particularly acute in the academic health care centers where all faculty members have a permanent and all encompassing responsibility as role models for students and junior faculty.  Therefore, we all need to learn to optimize our day-to-day formal and informal leadership opportunities.  An important piece of that skill is understanding the contribution of cognitive style to interpersonal relationships and leadership in general.  In this one hour Audio Seminar, Dr. Curry will provide an overview of the role of cognitive style in formal and informal leadership.  Particular examples and experiences will be highlighted from different stages of the academic career.

New Medical Education Publication Opportunity

The Editorial Board of the Journal of the International Association of Medical Science Educators and the Publications Committee of IAMSE recently announced two new initiatives:

·         “Innovative Ideas in Medical Education.” These are short, no more than 350 words, descriptions of innovative techniques in medical education.

·         The publication of one or two monographs per issue.   The monographs are to be longer articles on a specific subject of general interest to medical educators. It is envisioned that many of these submissions will be reviews of topics of general interest or “how to” papers ( i.e. professionalism education, research methods in education, lecture techniques). Monographs will be actively solicited. Potential authors are also encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief of JIAMSE, Uldis Streips - unstre01@louisville.edu - with proposals for monographs. Submitted manuscripts will be peer reviewed prior to publication.
