Because openings are limited, we can only offer senior electives to medical students currently enrolled in LCME-accredited schools within the United States and Canada. Visiting medical students are limited to a maximum of 8 weeks total elective coursework within our University-affiliated hospitals where no more than 4 weeks are done within one department. That is, if openings exist, a visiting student could do 4 weeks in one department and another 4 weeks of elective work in another department for a maximum of 8 weeks.
In addition to completing our application form click here for the application , please send a copy of your medical school transcript, USMLE Step 1 score and immunization record. Additionally, please furnish us written documentation of OSHA and HIPAA training, malpractice insurance coverage, and personal health insurance coverage.
Upon receipt of your application materials, and after our medical students have completed scheduling for the coming year, the application will be forwarded to our clinical department(s) to see if openings exist for the time you request. The department(s) will then return the form with a response to Student Affairs who monitors any previous assignments or electives completed. The Office of Student Affairs will then send written notification to you regarding the outcome of your request.
Elective assignments are honored by department instructors only upon the written authorization of the Associate Dean for Medical Education of your home institution. After you have completed the elective month, a copy of the evaluation of your work will be sent to your medical school for your file.
