Creighton's chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society inducted its second class of honorees on October 4, 2005.   The GHHS recognizes student and faculty exemplars of excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.  David C. Leach, MD, Executive Director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education was on hand to help bestow the awards.  Dr. Leach also delivered the 2005 Gold Foundation Lecture entitled "The Formation of Physicians: Competence and Character.”

The 2005 student honorees include:  Katharine Armstrong, Anela Bonic, Mary Bussey, Mack Eleid, Jamie (Eder) Frey, Jessica Jones, Kris Kazlauskas, Paul Mathew, Kelli Shannon, Eri Shimizu, George Tripp, Benjamin Young and Steven Zahn. 

New Faculty members inducted included PaulaJo Malin, MD, Cam Enarson, MD, Jimmy Khandalavala, MD, and Daniel Egan, MD. 

Creighton Medical Student Awarded Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship

New York, May 2, 2005 – Justin Josephsen of Omaha, a second year medical student at Creighton University, has been awarded the Robert Bosch Foundation Fellowship for 2005-2006.

Pathology Award

Bishoy Zakhary received the M2 Pathology Student of the Year award at the annual Department of Pathology Academic awards dinner.  Mr. Zakhary recieved the award for his exceptional performance in Pathology In addition, he received essentially a perfect score on the NBME Subject Examination in Pathology.

The Creighton University Chapter of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society inducted twenty students, three residents, two faculty members and two alumni at the 2005 annual reception and banquet.  Fourth year student inducted included Anne Allie, Daniel Babbel, Zulma Barrios, Tracy Campbell, James Conley, Nicholas Connolly, Daniel Davenport, Chrystie Fujimoto, Jeremy Gates, Joann, Gierbolini, Kara Kisling, Carey Kucirek, Jeffrey Macalena, Anand Rajani, Brian Sadowski and Ryan Wippler.  M3 Students inducted included Jamie Eder, Meghan Sebasky, Eri Shimizu and Steven Zahn.  Housestaff members that were inducted included Steven Haskett, Michael Jobst and Traci Jurrens.  Faculty inductees were Thomas Casale and Edibaldo Silva and Alumni inductess were Joann Porter and Joseph Townley.  Inductees were welcomed into the society by guest lecturer Vinay Kumar, MBBS, MD of the University of Chicago Medical School.

Creighton University Medical Students participated in the 36th Midwest Student Biomedical Research Forum, held on February 18-19, 2005. Creighton students once again had an excellent showing at this year’s meeting. There were a total of 99 student presentations with 24 of those being Creighton students. Creighton students overall won 7 of the possible 16 awards, with two medical students getting awards:   1st place for Poster Presentations went to M1 student Tim Ratino.  His presentation was entitled “Bone Remodeling with Smoke Exposure.” His faculty mentors were Diane Cullen and Mohammed Akhter.  4th place for Medical/Dental student presentations went to M2 student Sam Dubrow.  His presentation was entitled “LRP5 Gene Influences on Femoral Bone Structure and Strength.” His mentor is Mohammed Akhter.  Congratulations to all participants! 

Steven M. Zahn

Alpha Sigma Nu, the National Jesuit Honor Society, has inducted three students from Creighton University School of Medicine.  Anne C Allie, and Christopher E. Pelt, of the class of 2005 and Steven M. Zahn, of the class of 2006 were inducted in a ceremony on December 4, 2004.  The Society was founded in 1915 to honor a select number of students on the basis of scholarship, loyalty and service.  Inductees demonstrate an intelligent appreciation of and commitment to the ideals-intellectual social, moral and religious-of Jesuit Higher education.  Selection is one of the highest honors that can be given on a Jesuit campus.

Creighton University School of Medicine recently established the 34th Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS).  The GHHS recognizes senior medical students, residents, role-model physician teachers and other exemplars for demonstrated excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.  Arnold and Sandra Gold, of the Arnold P. Gold Foundation,  were on hand to bestow membership on 14 fourth year medical students at the inaugural banquet on October 21, 2004.  The GHHS inductees for 2004 include M4 students Ann Allie, Lowell Amiotte, Zulma Barrios, Corey Booker, Dan Gaffney, Stephanie Hanson, Jeff Macalena, Vinita Parikh, Rick Patch, Chris Pelt, Bethwel Raore, Ebe Shakir, Heather Snyder and Matt West.  Dr. Roger Brumback, Chair of Pathology, serves as the Faculty Advisor of the Chapter. 

We are pleased to announce that Kathryn Dey Huggett, Ph.D., has joined the Office of Medical Education as the Director of Medical Education Development and Assessment.   Dr. Huggett will coordinate curriculum and course evaluations and conduct faculty development activities in medical education and medical education research.  Dr. Huggett joins the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine, primarily as a medical education researcher and teacher.  Dr. Huggett began her duties on September 1, 2004.

Navy Lt. Charles F. Youngblood, a 2002 graduate of Creighton University School of Medicine, is currently serving as battalion surgreon for for the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, assigned to the 1st Marine Division in Iraq. Dr. Youngblood and his staff of corpsmen treated more than 50 patients during a humanitarian aid recently.  See the story HERE

The Undergraduate Medical Education Committee of the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO) has recognized our OB-Gyn Clerkship as one of the best in the nation.  Congratulations to Dr. Fleming and the OB-Gyn department for this extraordinary achievement!

The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) met on February 4-5, 2004 and voted to continue accreditation of the educational program leading to the MD degree at the Creighton University School of Medicine for an eight year term.  The LCME specifically enumerated seven institutional strengths in its final report.  Details...

2004 Match Results

The Central Group on Educational Affairs Annual Meeting was held in on Omaha March 18-20, 2003 at the Doubletree Hotel.  The meeting featured presentations on medical education from 37 medical schools in the Midwest US and Canada.  Creighton faculty were well represented on the program, offering six presentations on our educational programs.  

According to the Annual Graduation Questionnaire  from the American Association of Medical Colleges, approximately 96% of Creighton Graduates in the last three years agree or strongly agree with the statement that "Overall I am satisfied with the quality of my medical education."

Linda Pappas, MS,  has just joined the Student Affairs staff to provide medical students with academic assessment and counseling.  Her position is funded by a Center of Excellence Grant to Creighton University School of Medicine from the Health Resources and Services Administration.  Linda has extensive training and experience counseling students to improve their study or test-taking skills. Linda will also be providing skills training sessions several times each year for all medical students. She previously worked as Creighton University's Academic Success Counselor since 1989. She has been a valuable resource for students and we are excited to have her working with medical students.  Her temporary office is in room 471 in the Medical Education Center, Criss III.
