Writing 031
An introduction to academic writing on the paragraph level with the emphasis on organization and structure. Students will also be introduced to the fundamentals of the essay. Students can be expected to develop their skills by practicing the following types of writing: description, narration, summary, opinion, comparison and contrast.
Writing 032
This academic writing course applies students’ existing writing skills but primarily focuses on the essay rather than the paragraph. Students can be expected to develop their skills by practicing the following types of essay writing: comparison and contrast, summary, definition, process, classification, cause and effect and persuasion.
Writing 041
Writing 041 will prepare students for effective academic written work by helping them to organize information in English. Students explore and analyze writing topics and reflect on their writing strategies and progress. Students will learn to adjust writing skills and strategies according to academic audiences and purposes. Students will continue to build on what they learned in previous levels by reviewing and using paragraph development and organization and continuing on to essay development. Students connect their reading skills to their writing development and learn the different writing styles used for summary/reaction and cause/effect essays. Students will also be able to properly apply the grammar of academic writing to their papers.
Writing 042
A continuation of Writing 041. Students will build on the skills learned in 041 and continue to develop essays by continuing to learn to adjust writing skills and strategies according to academic audiences and purposes. Students connect their reading skills to their writing development and learn the different writing styles used for compare / contrast and persuasive essays. Students will also begin to learn to use source citation and apply the grammar of academic writing to their papers.
Writing 051
This advanced writing course prepares students with the writing strategies and skills and the critical thinking skills they need for university-level writing assignments. Students will develop these strategies and skills through reading and responding to academic texts and other media. Students build on what they have learned in Writing 04 to include the use of outside sources in developing various writing assignments such as summary/response, exemplification, comparison/contrast and cause/effect. Students will also work on improving grammatical structures academic vocabulary and keep a journal of personal reflections and responses to academic readings, discussions and field trips.
Writing 052
This course builds on the academic writing strategies and skills developed in Writing 051. Students will continue to use critical reading and thinking skills as they use outside sources to develop various writing assignments such as summary/response, cause/effect and persuasion/argumentation. This course will also focus on the development of a guided research paper with appropriate documentation. Students will continue to work on improving grammatical structures and academic vocabulary and keep a journal of personal reflections and responses to academic readings, discussions and field trips.
