Special Topics

TOEFL Preparation
For advanced students who want to prepare for the paper-based TOEFL.  Students will learn English language skills and test-taking strategies necessary for each section of the TOEFL.  Students will monitor their progress through a pre-test and a post-test.  Extensive practice exercises and tests that help build the student’s language skills and confidence will be provided.

Conversation
A high intermediate topic and task based conversation course designed to provide intensive practice in conversation and reading related to various current event topics.  This course engages readers, stimulates thinking, and inspires conversation while developing vocabulary, reading, and discussion skills.  The course focuses on giving students background in a variety of current event topics and also includes weekly tasks designed to offer students opportunities to use grammar in context while speaking, participating in, and leading class discussions.  Students will also have informal chances to improve their pronunciation in a conversational context.
 
Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL)
With the guidance of an IELI Instructor in computer lab class, students will

  • practice and reinforce language skills learned in IELI courses through a series of web-based shareware and textbook online supplemental materials
  • enhance their knowledge of Campus Email (Outlook), Blackboard, Word, PowerPoint for the effective use of these and other software
  • complete their teacher directed projects
  • engage in discussions on instructional and technological issues that support their learning
