Introduction and Program Description
HS-MACA in collaboration with the School of Dentistry administers the Creighton University School of Dentistry Post-baccalaureate Certificate Program, while some Creighton College of Arts and Sciences professors teach the classes. The Program is designed to assist disadvantaged students by providing them with a comprehensive program of coursework, clinical experiences, and support for preparation and admission to dental school. Predental Post-baccalaureate program consists of the following components:
1. Diagnostic Summer Session
(8 weeks) (begins first Monday of June) Call department (402 2803925) for starting date
- Academic skills assessment
- Curricular review sessions in Biology, Chemistry, Perceptual Ability, Mathematics, and English
- Training in study skills, test taking, time management, library
- Computer skills training
Note: There is a short break between the Summer Session and the Academic Year Program
2. Academic Year Program
(2 semesters)
Fall Session: mid-August thru mid-December.
Spring Session: mid-January thru first week of May
- Intensive coursework in Biology, Chemistry, Perceptual Ability, Mathematics, and English (Writing, and Analytical Reading)
- Kaplan DAT preparation course
- Academic Excellence
3. Prematriculation Summer Program
(6 weeks) mid-May thru last week of June, call department (402 2803925)for starting date.
- Preview of medical school curriculum including Histology and Embryology, Biochemistry, Anatomy (Lecture/Lab), Physiology, Dental Anatomy, and Dental Materials and Academic Excellence. These sessions will be taught by the same School of Dentistry faculty that the students will have during dental school at Creighton University.
4. Clinical Opportunities
- Training in academic and personal clinical skills
- Field trips to clinics in the underserved areas of Omaha
- Dentist shadowing
5. Mentoring and Support Services
- Computer facilities within the Health Sciences and its libraries
- Center of Excellence (COE) Resource Center
- Office of Health Sciences, Multicultural and Community Affairs (HS-MACA)
- Social and support group opportunities
Criteria for Success in the Program:
The successful post baccalaureate student will achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (4.0 scale) or greater on all academic work in the Program. In addition, the successful student will achieve a minimum score of 17 on the DAT in Academic Average, Perceptual Ability and Total Science in the DAT exam that will be taken in March (spring semester of Academic Year). Finally, the successful student will have a positive letter of support from the Program Director that covers professionalism, interpersonal skills, and readiness for the study of dentistry.
The successful post baccalaureate student is guaranteed a seat in the next fall entering class at Creighton University School of Dentistry. A scholarship of $10,000 will be awarded per year per student as part of the admission to Creighton University School of Dentistry package. Students will also be eligible for additional scholarship assistance such as the Raymond Rucker Endowed Scholarship ($1,000) and the Robert Wood Johnson Scholarship ($1,500). In order to retain the $10,000 guaranteed scholarship, students must pass all dental school courses each academic year and advance with their class.
Eligibility
Eligible students must be “a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or foreign national who possess a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States.”. They must have earned a baccalaureate degree with a significant science focus and they MUST NOT have been previously accepted to a dental school. Indeed, the eligible student must have applied to and been denied entry into dental school. Further, the applicant must not be currently enrolled in dental school or another health or allied health professions degree-granting program. In fact, Creighton University requires that each accepted applicant withdraw any active applications to such degree-granting programs as a condition of acceptance to the Post baccalaureate Program at Creighton University School of Dentistry.
Student Responsibilities: Accepted applicants must provide documentary evidence satisfactory to Creighton University that they are covered by health insurance. They must also provide immunization records. The accepted applicants are also expected to meet the responsibility of the program fees and their own living expenses in addition to any tuition fees for the courses. Financial assistance is available through FAFSA and alternative loans.
