Service is the best part of FLP!  Whether you are coming from Alaska or Council Bluffs, getting involved can be intimidating. Doing service through FLP is a great way to jump right in.  In addition to the bi-weekly sites, FLP does weekend service around Omaha. Usually these weekend service days happen once a month, and can be anything from cleaning up Omaha to making blankets for Children’s Hospital. As the Service Exec, it is my hope that everyone finds a site they can connect with and will enjoy visiting even after their freshman year.

Freshman Leadership Program  >  Service

Service

Service is an integral part of the Freshman Leadership Program. Members of the program are divided into six different service site groups. These groups do biweekly service at various sites around Omaha. This year the sites are:

  • Precious Memories: Precious Memories is a non-profit day care for underprivileged children in Omaha.  Located close to campus, it has been a staple of FLP service for years.  In the past, we have done weekly service there, playing with the kids and cleaning up around the center, as well as building and painting the fence outside.
  • Project Welcome, Mason Apartments: Mason Apartments is part of Project Welcome, which is a project in Omaha that works with Sudanese Refugees become acclimatized to life in the US. FLP helps in the after school homework club, although about as much time is spent running around as tutoring. Last year, FLP took kids from Mason to the Children’s Museum.
  • Campfire, USA: Camp Fire USA Midlands Council provides neighborhood-based after school programs to youth in North, South, and East Omaha as well as Council Bluffs. Camp Fire USA serves boys and girls in pre-kindergarten through middle school. FLP helps with the Campfire after-school programs at two elementary schools around campus.
  • South Omaha Boys and Girls Club: The Boys and Girls Club is a group that allows young people to realize their full potential. Students that volunteer there participate in numerous activities from the arts to sports. This Boys and Girls Club is also Kiewit Hall's community partner so FLP students will work with other freshman students in their hall.
  • The Hope Center for Kids: The Hope Center is located not far from campus in North Omaha, and works to bring hope to the children of that area.  They provide education, life-skills training, recreation, and refuge.  We help with various activities at this site, but most importantly building relationships with the kids who attend.
  • Siena Francis House: The Siena Francis House provides food, shelter and medical attention to people in need. It also supplies them with educational tools. FLP volunteers serve meals, work in the storage center and interact with the community.
