Web Naming Policy and Standards
Adopted April 7, 2005
Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to outline the correct way in which tier 1 URLs should be allocated within sub-domains. Together with the sub-domain policy, this policy helps to provide an organized and coherent structure for Creighton University's web presence.
Scope
This policy applies to all systems serving web-pages through JAYNet, and all official presences of the University and its affiliated schools, divisions, colleges, or other organizations on the world wide web.
Policy
- For the main Creighton web, www.creighton.edu, the same rules that apply to sub-domains apply to tier 1 URLs.
- For the main Creighton web, in addition to the above, special landing pages selected by the Office of the Webmaster shall be given tier 1 URLs.
- Tier 1 URLs should be allocated to departments of divisions, schools, and colleges within their respective sub-domains (level one and two entities).
- Tier 1 URLs should be allocated to major projects of divisions, schools, and colleges within their respective sub-domains (level one and two entities).
- Tier 1 URLs for students, faculty, and staff are allocated under the people sub-domain.
- All tier 1 URLs should be devoid of abbreviations where possible.
Examples
- doit.creighton.edu/customersupport/ : Acceptable. DoIT is a division of the university, headed by it’s own Vice President, and customer support is a department of that division.
- doit.creighton.edu/doitforstudents/: Unacceptable. Doit for Students is a sub-department of customer support, not of DoIT.
- www.creighton.edu/cas/: Acceptable. The College of Arts and Sciences is a college of the University. The College of Arts and Sciences thus has a sub-domain, which references it’s tier 1 domain.
- cas.creighton.edu/africanstudies/: Acceptable. The African Studies department is a department of the College of Arts and Sciences. This same page should also be accessible through www.creighton.edu/cas/africanstudies.
- cas.creighton.edu/accounting/: Unacceptable. In this case, accounting refers to the accounting department of the College of Business. The URL should be business.creighton.edu/accounting or www.creighton.edu/business/accounting.
Definitions
- Level One:
Websites for CU colleges, selected departments, service and administrative units, institutes, laboratories and bureaus. - Level Two:
Websites for departments, CU committees, organizations, and student groups. Also includes course websites, personal websites that contain course information, CU sponsored conference, symposia, and exhibition websites. - Level Three:
Websites affiliated with the university such as personal web pages that are hosted on university web servers. - Creighton University web server
Creighton University purchased computers with services that host web content intended to represent official University colleges, departments, service and administrative units, institutes, laboratories and bureaus.
Tier 1 URL
A Tier 1 URL is the first division of a website beneath its sub-domain level.
Responsibilities
The office of the webmaster is responsible for adhering to this policy when dealing with the maintenance of Creighton University’s web presence.
The Creighton public is responsible for adhering to this policy when administering to their respective area’s web presence.
Administration and Interpretations
This policy shall be administered by the Office of the Webmaster. Questions regarding this policy should be directed to the Office of the Webmaster.
Amendment/Termination of this Policy
The University reserves the right to modify, amend or terminate this policy at any time. This policy does not constitute a contract between the University and its faculty or employees.

Exceptions
Existing URLs
The Office of the Webmaster exempts from this policy all currently existing tier 1 URLs as of the official publication of this document. The Webmaster maintains this exception only for the sake of consistent user access to Creighton’s resources. It should be understood by all parties that the webmaster does not intend for these exceptions to remain on any sort of a permanent basis. The webmaster will work with individual exceptions to enhance adherence.
Violations/Enforcement
Any known violations of this policy should be reported to the Office of the Webmaster via e-mail to webmaster@creighton.edu. Violations of this policy can result in immediate withdrawal or suspension of access to Creighton University web resources or network resources as applicable, as well as any procedures outlined in University procedures.
