Building a Subscription Page
Subscription Pages
There are several steps to get subscription page up and running. We are going to go through them one at a time.
1. Log into your blog using your NetID and Blue Password.
2. Select the “Links” menu item.
3. Select the “Link Categories” Submenu item
4. To create a new Category first look under the "Add a Link Category" to the "Category Options" section. Name your new category in the “Name” text box. (You can change the additional options if you want but that isn’t needed.)
Hit the “Add Category” button.
5. Select the “Add Link” submenu item
Here you are going to add the URL of the RSS feeds that you would like to subscribe to. These URLs can be from other blogs or websites that employ RSS feeds, such as CNN.com or ESPN.com
- To get the Subscription URL you will need to open a second browser window or tab if you are using the Firefox browser and go to the blog or site you are interested in subscribing to.
- Not all sites are designed the same and giving a specific location to find the RSS feed link is impossible, there are some helpful guides. First, most blogs have a link at the bottom of the page that reads “All Posts”. In the case of the Creighton Blogs the link to the RSS Feed for the blog is listed in the navigation bar.
- Click on the RSS link for “All Posts.”
- What you are going to see next is the XML document in the browser window. You aren’t interested in that. You are interested in the URL that is displayed in the Address window at the top of your browser. The URL should look something like this: https://blogs.creighton.edu/blogging/?feed=rss2
- Select the entire URL and copy it.
- Now go back to the Add Link page in your blog. Take the URL that you just copied and paste it into the “RSS URI” text box towards the bottom of the page. (This is different than the “URI” text box at the top of the page. We will get to that in a bit.)
- Now, toward the top of the page fill in the “Link Name” and “short description” text boxes.
- Under the “short description” text box is a pull down menu. Click on the down arrow and select the category that you created in step 4. Your new link is now associated with your new link category.
- Click on the “Add Link” button.
You can add as many different RSS feeds to a category as you want.
6. Click on the “Subscriptions” Submenu item
7. Activate the Subscription for your new category by clicking on the word “Activate” new to your category name. Once clicked the word will change to “Deactivate”
You’ve now made your new subscription page active. Click on the “View Site” Link at the top of the page to see your new Subscription page listed on your blog.
Any RSS Link that you have associate with this subscription will new be fed to a single page.
