VPN Tutorial - Introduction
Overview & Objectives
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. This is an apt description since a VPN system creates an "encrypted tunnel" in the internet that only allows authenticated users access. It allows data to be sent privately, without being accessed by others using the public network.
There are three ways a VPN does this. First, it requires user authentification. Second, it creates a private "tunnel" for the transmission of data. Third, it requires verification of data as being unadulterated.
There are benefits to using a VPN. Most obviously, it provides privacy. This is important as an academic institution and is critical given the HIPAA requirements we must comply with as a medical/research institution. It also verifies that the information sent retains its integrity, providing a secure transmission of the data. Other benefits include its use of the existing networks, keeping it a cost effective solution. It also provides protection against NetBIOS attacks.
The VPN can only be used from off campus. Attempting to use it on campus will result in an error message.
