Lenovo Sony Battery Recall

Sony batteries have been in the news with recalls for Apple and Dell portable computers.  Due to a recent situation, Sony is recalling their batteries found in some Lenovo laptops.  Lenovo is a provider for Creighton computer equipment.

Hours ago, Lenovo issued a national press release advising customers how to proceed.  DoIT has contacted a Lenovo Senior Vice-president to gather more details.  There are 520,000 Lenovo laptops involved in the recall with only 200,000 in the United States.  Only a few of those models are on campus.  Of the units we have checked so far, none were affected.

To assist us with this potential issue, please follow the steps below.  These instructions apply only to Lenovo laptops:

  1. Go to www.lenovo.com/batteryprogram
  2. Use the automated solution and click the link 'detect battery information on the system you are currently using'
  3. Click Run (wait for the program to download)
  4. Click Run again when prompted
  5. Click Install when prompted
  6. Click Finish when prompted
  7. You will get a message identifying if your battery is affected
  8. If your battery is not affected, you may start  using the battery
  9. If you battery is affected, please remove the battery and contact the Service Desk
  10. Our Service Desk will be able to get a replacement battery and install it
