Microsoft Vista, is an operating system designed with the intention of replacing Microsoft XP.  Understanding that a new operating system could have a significant impact to our campus, Best Practices was charged with reviewing the system and making recommendations.

Scope and Audience

This document provides Creighton University decision makers with information about possible impacts of implementing Windows Vista, available options and scenarios.

Overview

The Best Practices team produced this report after spending several weeks examining a pre-beta release - Vista Community Technology Preview (CPT 5308) - and discussing industry reports and past experiences with operating system migrations.

Conclusions

Adopting Vista at some point is inevitable. The key questions are:

The Best Practices group agreed to the following statements:

  1. There are no compelling features in Vista that lead us to recommend immediate deployment
  2. Adoption should occur following the release of Service Pack 1
  3. Creighton should begin testing Vista as soon as it is released
  4. Many university vendors will need to certify product compatibility before the university can implement Vista
  5. Vista will present non-trivial training and support considerations
  6. Simultaneous support for multiple versions of Windows will significantly increase support overhead – we should pursue strategies to minimize the costs, complexities and duration of supporting multiple versions of Windows
  7. Creighton should begin assembling qualified teams to lay the groundwork for:
