Connect on campus: Students

Students can connect to the campus network (with their own devices) in two ways. Through the cable modem in their residence hall rooms, or wirelessly on Creighton’s Wireless Network.

Residence Hall Networking

During the Summer of 2005, the Division of Information Technology converted the residence halls (except Davis Square) from the older, slower connections to new high-speed connections. Students can expect when they arrive for Fall semester that instead of plugging into the old connection in the room, they will plug into the new 4 port cable modem that will be ready to go.

What you will need to connect

1. A network interface card.

2. Ethernet cable or USB cable.

DoIT For Students recommends connecting through Ethernet as it is the easiest to setup.

Setup Process

1. Locate the black cable modem in your residence hall room (it should be located near the cable jack).

2. Make sure the cable modem is plugged into the black coax cable and the power cable is plugged in. Verify all the connections are tight.

3. The power, ready, and sync lights should all be on.

4. Plug one end of a network cable (CAT5 cable) into one of the Ethernet ports on the back of the modem (the side where the power and coax cables plug in).

5. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on the back or side of your computer.

6. Turn your computer on and it should automatically connect to the network.

Troubleshooting

Are you plugging into the Black Cable Modem on the wall and NOT the old JAYnet Ethernet-port?

Is the Modem plugged into an electrical outlet and powered on?

Have you checked all the cable connections (both coax cable and Ethernet cable) to make sure they are tight?

Have you checked your network settings to make sure your computer is configured to automatically obtain an IP Address?

Try resetting your Cable Modem by powering off the modem for 1 minute and then restarting your computer once the cable modem is powered back on.

If you request a technician sent to your room for a problem that is found to be user error (i.e. Cables are not connected) you will be charged $75.00 for the on-site visit. If the problem is related to the Cox network, you will not be charged.
