Latest Threats, Myths, and Hoaxes
Here is a list of the top ten latest threats, via Symantec.
A list of known hoaxes can be found at www.symantec.com/avcenter/hoax.html. If a program or a message has recently made you believe you have a virus, consider the source. Often times, companies may email you or present a pop-up advertisement informing you that you have a virus, and must download their software to cure yourself. While it is true that these diagnosises may sometimes be correct, be careful if they direct you to take any specific action, especially the installation or removal of software.
Symantec and Microsoft will never distribute warnings about viruses or patches via email. The Division of Information Technology may distribute information about current viruses through email, but this course of action is only taken in the most dire of circumstances, and will always be sent through an official campus email list, never directed at any one person. If you have any questions regarding a message you have received, please feel free to ask any of our trained technicians, reachable at (402)-280-1111 or by email at servicedesk@creighton.edu.
