CORE
Foreign Language Requirement
Any
student who has completed two or more years of foreign language in high school
shall not be allowed to take the 111-level course in that language for credit.
Any student who has taken four or more years of foreign language in high school
shall not be allowed to enroll for credit in the 111- or 112-level course
in that language. A Language Resource Center is available for students
who wish to review their language skills prior to entering a particular course.
Exceptions to this policy will only be granted by the faculty of the departments
that teach the languages.
The language requirement can also be fulfilled by performance on a foreign
language proficiency exam demonstrating competency equivalent to the 200-level
course in that language. The exams will be administered by the Modern
Languages department and the Classics and Near Eastern Studies department.
Students may petition to study American Sign Language, to demonstrate their
proficiency in a language not offered in our curriculum, or to be excused
from the language requirement on grounds that English is their second language.
These permissions and other waivers will be granted by the Associate Dean.
