Paying Part-time Faculty to Teach Classes with Low Enrollments

Calculations based on the University's current undergraduate tuition rate and on the University's standard per-section salary scale for part-time faculty reveal that the College loses money on any three-credit-hour section that enrolls fewer than four students. (In fact, these calculations already ignore the indirect administrative costs of running such sections.)

For this reason, where the department chair and the dean agree that it is important to offer such a section, it is College policy to pay the instructor $500 per student in lieu of the per-section salary.

Exceptions may be made to this policy. In such cases, the Dean must approve the payment method to be used in writing before any offer of employment is extended to the prospective instructor.
