ART 391: Introduction to Chinese Art

The history of Chinese art offers students an ancient tradition which is constantly being amplified by extraordinary new archaeological finds from the past and a vibrant modern art movement. We will look at the form and content of Chinese art, emphasizing its unique aesthetic style, its contrast from Western art, and how it was adapted to many purposes from its earliest manifestations to the present day. We will look at the grand imperial sites and modern centers of Beijing and many other cities. In addition, we shall meet local university students and participate in a service project.

(Students have the option to take either of the two classes offered above. You also have the option to not receive credit for the course (i.e. audit or not register), or to take an independent study course offered through the philosophy department. If you have any questions, please contact us - see below for contact information)

Description
:
The Philosophy Department at Creighton University offers a study abroad opportunity in China every summer through Creighton's FLPA program (Faculty-Led Program Abroad).  Around ten to twelve Creighton students will be chosen to take part in this program, which will be led by two or three faculty members. The travel adventure will include the choice of a three-credit course typically on Chinese Philosophy or Art.

Because this travel opportunity is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and by China's Soong Ching-Ling Foundation, it is a rare opportunity.  The total cost of the entire trip is usually around $3,250.  This covers tuition, international airfare, hotels, train travel in China, other local transportation, three meals daily, fees to visit museums and historical sites, and mandatory travel insurance for international activity.  Money for other personal expenses, of course, will be the student’s own responsibility.
