Q. : When are the new majors in French, German and Spanish going into effect?
These three new majors are now in effect for the Spring 2008 semester.
Q.: What is required to apply for a language major?
All language majors require that you have completed the 202 course with a grade of C or better. The pertinent link is on the CCAS website.
Q.: What are the requirements of the previous French, German and Spanish majors?
Previously, the Spanish and German majors required 21 credit hours, beginning with 311. The French Major required 18 credit hours, starting with 311.
Q.: What are the requirements of the new French, German and Spanish majors?
The new French and German majors will require 27 credit hours, beginning with 311 (or 303). The new Spanish Major will require 33 credit hours, starting with 311.
Q.: Who will be obliged to follow the new language majors?
Only those students who have applied to these majors after May 10, 2008, will be bound by the requirements of the new language programs. Students previously admitted to the French, German and Spanish majors will have the option to convert to the new programs, but will not be obliged to do so. It is not recommended that Seniors graduating this year switch to the new majors, but they are free to take additional advanced courses if they so choose.

All three minors require 18 credit hours, beginning with 201.
Q.: What are the requirements of the new French, German and Spanish Minors?
The new minors also require 18 credit hours, beginning with 201. However, these new programs will also require a minimum number of credits in certain categories of courses (cultural studies, specialized language, literature).
Q.: How do you apply for a language Minor?
You simply declare the minor (French, German or Spanish) through a link on the CCAS website.
Q.: Who will be obliged to take the new French, German and Spanish Minors?
Only those students who declare their minors after May 10, 2008, will be admitted to these programs and bound by their regulations.
Q.: What is the status of the proposed Italian Minor?
The proposed Italian Minor has been adopted by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. However, discussion on this proposal has been tabled by the College, pending the granting of a new full-time faculty line to Italian by the University. A decision on the Italian Minor is expected in the Spring of 2008.
Q.: What will be the requirements of the new Italian Minor?
The new Italian Minor will require 18 credit hours, beginning with ITA 201, together with a certain number of obligatory culture and literature courses. It will be interdisciplinary.
Q.: What should I do if I have problems deciding which major or minor, and consequently which courses I should take next semester, in French, German or Spanish?
Please make an appointment immediately with your language major advisor, or in the case of a minor, with your current language professor.
