Scholarship Opportunities for Education Majors
The following scholarships are available to help students who meet the respective criteria. Recipients will be announced in the spring with funding for fall 2008.
All scholarships require a letter of application specifically addressing the scholarship criteria. A student may apply for these scholarships before being accepted into the Education Department; actual acceptance as a major/co-major must occur before the application deadline listed below. For those scholarships requiring "financial need." the letter of application should be accompanied by verification from the Creighton/s Financial Aid Office reflecting a "need" for assistance.
All letters of application must reach Howard J. Bachman in the Education Department by April 10, 2008.

JESSE JAMES SHELTON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Endowed on July 29, 1997, the Jesse James Shelton Endowed Scholarship is intended to provide scholarship funds to minority students enrolled in teacher education.
"...allocable distributions therefore shall be used to provide scholarships for minority students in the College of Arts and Sciences" Department of Education who are of high academic standing and are able to demonstrate, according to accepted practices, the need for financial aid in order to continue their education, and who meet the criteria established by the Jesse James Shelton Scholarship Committee. The scholarship may be renewed, based up the students' academic progress and availability of funds."
Criteria established by the Committee, as of July 1997, are:
Minority student as defined in "A Summary Progress Report on Diversity at Creighton University from 1964-1994.
Enrollment in undergraduate teacher education coursework.
Acceptance in Education Department
Evidence of financial need.
ADELE M. JOHNSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Creighton University's newest endowed scholarship for Elementary Education Majors and Secondary Education Co-majors within the traditional full-time undergraduate curriculum is the result of an exceptionally generous gift designed in the will of Adele M. Johnson.
A very dedicated Catholic, Miss Johnson had the highest regard for the teaching profession. Her mother, and many of her family members, chose the teaching profession and it was her desire to assist financially those individuals aspiring to that profession. Letters of application for this scholarship should reflect the origins of their interest in the teaching profession.
GERTRUDE BECKERS KING ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Endowed in 1995, the Gertrude Becker's King Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of Ms. King whose first teaching position was in a rural school in South Dakota.
"Her greatest joy was to see the light of discovery on the face of students, and her family hopes that this scholarship eventually will enable future teachers to have the same joy."
The recipient will be an undergraduate student who:
has been officially admitted to the Education Department with a major in elementary education;
has a demonstrated financial need; and
has a willingness to assist him/herself through some type of part-time employment (including summer jobs).
JOSEPH HARRISON JACKSON ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP
Endowed on 12/20/96, the Joseph Harrison Endowed Scholarship is:
".....for students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences' Department of Education who are of high academic standing and are able to demonstrate, according to accepted practices, the need for financial aid in order to continue their education. The scholarship is renewable, based upon the student's progress and availability of funds." Applications are accepted from any student who has been accepted as a major or co-major in the Education Department.

Catholic Educators Scholarship (Leo Jack's Catholic Educator Endowment Fund)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
• Teachers and administrators currently employed full-time in a K-12 Catholic school.
PROGRAM DETAILS
• 3 credits per semester qualify for a reduction fall/spring; 6 credits in summer
• Courses must be taken in the Graduate School
• Students in all graduate education programs are eligible except students in the Magis program
• Student must complete and submit remission form each semester
AMOUNT OF REDUCTION AVAILABLE
• 1/4 of full tuition cost
• 3/4 of full tuition cost when combined with either the M.Ed. Scholarship or the K - 12 School Teacher Improvement Program
• Applicable fees must be paid by student

• To qualify, students must be enrolled in the graduate secondary teaching program or be completing prerequisite coursework in anticipation of application to the program
• Discount applies to both certification courses & subject area courses
• Director of Secondary Education Program sends memo listing students who qualify for scholarship to Ann O'Dowd in Business Office each term: fall, spring, summer

• Students pursuing K - 12 Religious Education Teaching Endorsement
PROGRAM DETAILS
• Scholarships are limited to # of students program funding can support per semester
• Students in the MA THL/RE Program are given funding priority
• Student must demonstrate financial need (see scholarhsip form)
• Student must currently be teaching or preparing to teach religion in a K - 12 Catholic School
• Student must take at least 3 credits per semester and maintain 3.0 G.P.A.
• EDU & THL courses qualify
• 12 credits per semester eligible for reduction fall/spring/summer
• Student must complete and submit form every semester
AMOUNT OF REDUCTION AVAILABLE
• 1/4 of full tuition cost
• A student in the RE program may combine a Hauser Scholarship award with a Ministry Tuition Remission Award and an M.Ed. Scholarship to receive a 3/4 reduction of full tuition cost on EDU and THL courses

• 3 credits per semester qualify for funding fall/spring/summer
• Courses must be taken inthe Graduate School
• Eligible courses: EDU 520, EDU 602, EDU 603, EDU 604, EDU 605, Edu 60_ (final course for CSL certificate to be developed and course number to be determined)
AMOUNT OF REDUCTION AVAILABLE
• 3/4 of full tuition cost for full time educators in Catholic Schools (school teacher improvement funds provide 1/2 + CSL funds provide 1/4)

• Only THL courses qualify for reduction
• Students seeking MA in THL with K-12 Religious Education teaching. Endorsement may apply for tuition reduction of their THL courses through this program
• 9 credits per semester qualify for reduction fall/spring; unlimited in summer
• Courses may be taken through University College or the Graduate School
• Student must be engaged in Church ministry (see remission form)
• Student must be enrolled in a CU graduate program (see remission form)
• Student must complete and submit remission form every semester
