At present, I am an associate professor and have been at Creighton University since 1994 (Ph.D. from University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 1995). I am also a faculty member for the Health Administration and Policy (HAP) program and enjoy working with students from both departments. Courses I enjoy teaching are Family Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Health Communication, Communication Theory, Gender Communication and Managerial Communication, though I have taught several other courses while at Creighton.
My areas of research include interpersonal and familial communication with an emphasis on health care and acute illnesses, metaphors and dialectics; as well as instructional communication and the pedagogical implications of service-learning. Some of my research has been published in outlets such as the Michigan Journal of Community Service Learning, Communication Teacher, the Journal of Business Communication and the Family Communication Sourcebook for Theory and Research. I am quite active in the Experiential Learning in Communication Division for the National Communication Association and recently was awarded the Service-Learning Research Award from the Midwest Consortium for Service-Learning in Higher Education. Currently, I am working on a project assessing service-learning across all colleges within the Midwest Consortium. In my spare time, I enjoy applied scholarship presenting workshops to various campus and community organizations, going on retreats with students and spending time with family.
I am excited for the opportunity in the fall of 2008 to teach for part of the semester in the Encuentro Dominicano program at the ILAC Center (Institute for Latin American Concern) in Santiago.
