The Asian World Center is pleased to announce the 2007 "AWC Distinguished Lecture Series." The program aims to bring leading scholars and prominent individuals to visit Creighton University and share their insights and experiences with scholars, policy makers, business leaders and the general public.
Inaugural Event - Fall 2007
With support from the Department of Political Science and International Relations, the inaugural AWC Distinguished Lecture Series presents Dr. Scott A. Silverstone from the United States Military Academy, West Point. Dr. Silverstone is an associate professor and former Carnegie Council Fellow. His lecture topic is “Nuclear Proliferation and Preventive War: The History of a Moral and Strategic Dilemma” (click link for flyer). The event is open to the public. It starts at 12:30 pm in room 104 at the Skutt Student Center on Monday, October 8, 2007.
Dr. Silverstone's main areas of academic interest include international relations theory, international security, and American foreign policy, with a concentration on the domestic politics of war. His first book, Divided Union: The Politics of War in the Early American Republic (Cornell University Press, 2004), examines how the distinctive federal structure of American democracy affected the use of military force by the United States before the Civil War. His newly released book Preventive War And American Democracy (Routledge Press, 2007), begins with the crises of the Cold War period, when despite the nuclear threat, preventive war was considered "contrary to the American character and its traditions of foreign policy." It concludes with an analysis of the Iraq War of 2003, the first preventive war in United States history.
Dr. Silverstone was a U.S. naval officer, and served in the Navy Command Center in the Pentagon from 1994-2000. In this position he was involved in crisis staffing during the Haiti intervention and NATO’s war in Kosovo. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999.
