Course Description
PHL 353: Introduction to Chinese Philosophy
This course is designed to explore the theory and practice of Chinese philosophy. The course will be taught mainly in China after two classes at Creighton. The course will introduce the development of Chinese philosophy from ancient to modern times. The contributions from a few main schools, such as Confucianism, Daoism, and Moism, will be carefully discussed. The basic doctrines and moral principles held by different Chinese philosophers will be examined. Students will not only study the theory of Chinese Philosophy but also experience it in various ways. Service learning is also a part of the course. Creighton students will have chances to meet Chinese scholars and college students.
Students are required to take part in three cultural learning projects. First, Creighton students are expected to do service learning in the Yungang Caves while studying the Chinese Buddhist heritages. Each student is required to do careful research on the Buddhist art works in the Yungang Caves and describe one cave in a short, written introduction. This introduction will be posted in front of the caves and be part of a presentation at the museum. Second, we will visit Shangri-La and do service learning in an elementary school there. Students are required to prepare for teaching a few English classes in the elementary school. Third, we will visit Xi'an and other historical places, after which students will be required to discuss the influence of Daoism and Confucianism on Chinese ways of thinking. Students will be encouraged to uncover similarities and differences between aspects of Chinese and Western culture.
ART 391: Introduction to Chinese Art
The history of Chinese art offers students an ancient tradition which is constantly being amplified by extraordinary new archaeological finds from the past and a vibrant modern art movement. We will look at the form and content of Chinese art, emphasizing its unique aesthetic style, its contrast from Western art, and how it was adapted to many purposes from its earliest manifestations to the present day. We will look at the grand imperial sites and modern centers of Beijing - the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, and the Olympic sites. We will travel to Xi'an, site of the burial of the first emperor guarded by his terra cotta armies. Then we go to Datong and the vast Buddhist caves at Yungang, followed by a trip to the scholar's world of gardens in Suzhou. We end in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai. In addition, we shall meet local university students and participate in a service project. Our host is the Soong Ching-Ling Foundation, and our co-participants come from Creighton University.
