Level Four Details
Level Four Activities
1. Leadership Position: Students are required to take on a leadership position at Creighton or in the community. This will allow the students to apply the leadership knowledge gained over the course of the Waite Leadership Scholars Program as well as their entire time at Creighton.
2. “Leadership Communication Skills” workshop by Dardis Communications: Designed to give seniors a competitive edge in life after college. You will learn how to look, sound and act like a leader in a business environment. Participants will come away with solid professional presence, physical and presentation skills.
- Workshop 1: Friday, September 14th, 2007, 12:00-4:00 p.m. in BA 109
- Workshop 2: Friday, September 14th, 2007, 5:00-9:00 p.m. in BA 109
3. Leadership Coaching: For this activity, Level Four scholars will be paired with another Level Four scholar to meet with a business executive at least twice during the fall semester. Although the leadership coach will receive student contact information, it is the students’ responsibility to contact him/her and organize the meeting at a time that works for all three people. This meeting can take place at any convenient location, whether the coach’s place of employment or a restaurant for lunch. The purpose of this meeting is to allow the students to ask questions about the coach’s leadership experience. For the first meeting, students will need to be prepared to ask questions based on the following:
a. General: How does the coach define success in business and what helped him or her find such success?
b. Specific: What should students do in their first 100 days of their first post-graduation job that will start them well on their way? What will be expected of them and what is most important for them to do/avoid in order to have the best start?
Post-Meeting Assignment: Following the initial meeting, the students are each responsible for preparing a bullet-pointed summary of the main advice taken from the discussion.
a. Each student will send this response to Jeremy Fisher for review. He will return it to each student with his thoughts.
b. Each student will then send the revised bullet-pointed summary to the leadership coach.
c. The students are then responsible for scheduling a second meeting with the leadership coach to share and extend these observations. This meeting should occur nearer the end of the fall semester.
4. Level One Mentor: For the spring semester, each Level Four scholar will become the mentor to a group of Level One scholars, reviewing their personal “Leadership Reflection Essay” and helping them put together a “Leadership Action Plan.”
a. The senior will be responsible for setting up the meeting (lunch or dinner on campus may be a good idea).
b. Your designated Level One scholar will be required to send their “Leadership Reflection Essay” to you for review prior to their meeting. The senior will then comment and extend these observations during the meeting. In addition to your feedback and suggestions, the goal is to help the Level One student put together, in writing, a “Leadership Action Plan,” which will guide them in their remaining years at Creighton and assist in their leadership development.
As mentors, seniors will be sharing advice for succeeding in college and addressing the students’ concerns as they begin their education at Creighton and their work in the Waite Leadership Program. This experience will allow the seniors to lead others as they travel the same leadership development paths.
