Professional Development Opportunities
Professional Dispositions & Values
“Can you, Socrates, tell me, is human excellence something teachable?” Posed by Plato almost 2, 500 years ago in the Meno, many educators continue to ponder this question and the topic of Professional Dispositions and Values. Moving beyond definitions of professionalism or even professional competence, the Office for Academic Excellence and Assessment is proud to offer a range of programs that explores Professional Dispositions and Values as qualities of character and moral imagination
Beginning with the inaugural CASTL Distinguished Lecture series, our year will be filled with opportunities to reflect on our teaching of professional dispositions and evidence of our students’ learning. Questions we may wish to ponder include: What are professional dispositions and values? What are the means for teaching professional dispositions and values? What is the extent to which the means are within the power of our teaching and learning processes? These and other questions will be addressed at the 2008 CASTL National Summer Institute, hosted by Creighton University, June 4-7. You are invited to begin this reflective journey as part of your professional development.
Additional opportunities for other forms of professional development abound. The 2007-2008 programs are as diverse as your teaching-learning interests and offered in sessions that range from one hour Time-Out for Lunches to semester- or year-long workgroups. You are encouraged to find the topic and learning community that best matches your interest and availability and begin our academic year, with your own commitment to teaching, learning, and reflective practice in the Creighton tradition.
