Construction/Maintenance Impacts
Living Learning Center and Associated Work
The project to install steam and chilled water to the Living Learning Center is about to start again. This phase of work will be from the area north of Ahmanson Law School through the abandoned parking lot to the west foundation wall of the Living Learning Center. The present schedule is to receive the remainder of the pipe for the project about February 23rd. The contractor, Mainelli Mechanical Contractors, will mobilize on February 26th and start to demolish the needed asphalt in the parking lot so trenching can begin. Actual excavation will start on March 2.
The excavation will start in the California Mall and extend north. While the trenching in the mall is open for construction, a temporary sidewalk will be placed to route people safely around the work. The piping will be installed and the trench backfilled expeditiously. The mall surface will be restored and opened.
On about March 20th, the trenching will start east of the parking lot on what used to be 21st Street. While this work is happening, people from Davis Square will be asked to walk through the abandoned parking lot to connect to the mall. An alternative route of building a temporary bridge over the trench is a presently unlikely option but that could change as the date approaches.
Mainelli Mechanical Contractors and Energy Systems are committed to having the project completed quickly. The current schedule is to have the project substantially completed on April 4th. The full project, including clean-up and demobilization is scheduled to be done on April 13th.
