Back training
A major percentage of worker compensation claims relate to back injuries. This is a simple half hour presentation and demonstration of back safety and lifting issues. It includes a seven minute video. (This is not mandatory training.)
Confined Space Entry
This training is required in accordance with the OSHA Confined Space Standard 29 CFR 1910.146. It is mandatory for all employees who may be required to enter a confined space. Confined spaces are defined as:
- Large enough and so configured that an employee can bodily enter and perform assigned work.
- Has limited or restricted means for entry and exit, (i.e. tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vents, and pits).
- Is not designed for continuous employee occupancy. (Note: This will include areas normally used only for maintenance purposes.)
For those employees affected by this regulation, training is required at the time of hire and annually thereafter. Training is approximately one half hour, inclusive of a video and discussion session. Employees requiring training include: all physical plant employees, all public safety employees, and EH&S personnel.
Ergonomics
There is currently no mandatory Federal or State requirement for a written Ergonomic Training Program. It is, however, EH&S policy to provide Ergonomic Work Station review(s) upon request. Reviews of individual work stations or of reported ergonomically related problems may be requested by effected employees, supervisors of effected employees and Risk Management. Training sessions will be provided for individuals, groups, or departments upon request and may be scheduled by calling Environmental Health and Safety at 546-6400.
Hazardous Materials Shipping
Shipment and transport of Hazardous Materials is defined by 49 CFR (Parts 100-185). The Department of Transportation (DOT) oversees enforcement of the regulation. Other agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversee specialized areas of commerce that pertain to transport by air. Rail, highway, and water are covered by separate specialized agencies.
This training is required of ALL PERSONNEL who are involved in any way with shipping diagnostic samples, infectious materials and dry ice. This includes personnel who call for Federal Express pick-up and those who carry the package to the shipping center. It is highly recommended that all investigators and staff whose projects include the shipping of hazardous materials attend. Please note that many grants require that investigators complete this training. A contact phone number where someone can be reached 24 hours regarding your shipments must be provided to Federal Express. This training is required every two years.

Laboratory Safety
Laboratory safety training is required in accordance with OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1910.1450. It is required for all new employees who work in laboratories at the time of hire, and annually thereafter. Laboratory safety training is normally conducted jointly with radiation safety training. Specific topics may vary due to the broad nature of the subject. In the past, presentations have included: slides of laboratory fires, videos from the Howard Hughes Institute, and regulation review (e.g. HAZCOM, Bloodborne Pathogens etc.) Employees affected include: researchers, chemists, biologists, lab technicians, housekeeping personnel, Public Safety, and EH&S personnel.

Lockout/Tagout and Electrical Safety
Although these programs are separate, they will normally be taught together in one session. Training is required in accordance with OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.147 and 1910.131-.335. Training is required for all maintenance employees who are exposed to any type of energy release during repair, maintenance or installation processes. Training will be conducted at the time of hire, and annually thereafter for pertinent personnel. This will include all Physical Plant employees. Training is approximately one hour long, inclusive of: demonstration, video, and discussion.
Vehicle Safety
Although not a mandated Federal or State requirement, Creighton University has taken a proactive stance regarding Vehicle Safety Policy and Procedure. Training, which takes between 45 minutes and one hour, is required for all individuals who drive a University vehicle. Training consists of: review of the University Policy, review of a 15 minute Driver Safety Training video, and a question and answer session. Training may be scheduled by contacting EH&S at 546-6400.
Special Projects Team
Due to an increased incidence of upper respiratory problems in the United States linked to mold related problems, mold and mildew have become items of major consequence regarding indoor air quality. At Creighton University, we have developed what we call a "Mold Team" which responds not only to reported mold clean up issues, but also includes the clean up of blood, rodent and bird droppings, and the disposition of dead rodents and birds on campus. Due to the nature of potential related diseases associated with the areas that are to be cleaned up by team members, extensive training is required in accordance with numerous Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. Initial training plus physical examination inclusive of Pulmonary Function test is required before individual team members are permitted to remediate reported problems.
Asbestos Awareness
Asbestos awareness training is required for all maintenance personnel and related occupations that may come into contact with Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM).
Two hour awareness training is required in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.1001. Note that respiratory protection in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134 is taught as a separate course for those individuals who are required to wear respirators. These individuals include some maintenance personnel and EH&S personnel.
Bloodborne Pathogens
This training is required in accordance with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens standard, 29 CFR 1910.1030. Bloodborne pathogens training is a mandatory requirement for all employees at risk of exposure to blood or body fluids once a month or more. It is initially required at the time of hire, and an annual refresher course is required thereafter. Training time is approximately 45 minutes and includes a question and answer period. Employees that may be at risk include: physicians, nurses, phlebotomists, researchers, public safety officers, physical plant employees, and EH&S personnel.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency and fire prevention procedures are required in accordance with OSHA Regulation 29 CFR 1910.38. This training is required at the time of hire. Training will be conducted for all employees at new employee orientation and/or upon request. The presentation includes: a Creighton specific presentation, handouts, and a discussion session.
Hazard Communication (HAZCOM)
Hazard Communication Training, commonly refered to as "Employees' Right to Know" is required by OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910.1200. It is required for all employees exposed to chemical hazards on the job. This training is presented at new employee orientation, and upon request. Training covers review of material safety data sheets (MSDS), emergency training, and chemical container labeling. Also, 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires additional training for employees introduced to new or additional hazards in the workplace.
Accident/Incident Reporting
All accidents/injuries, or blood/body fluid exposures must be reported to University Risk Management within 24 hours after the incident. Creighton University Form HR-24 is to be utilized in reporting. The form must be completed by the accident/exposure victim, and signed by the victim's supervisor. Specific questions relating to injury or reporting should be directed to Katie Detrick, University Risk Manager at 280-5833. Training and briefing regarding accident reporting is conducted by EH&S during monthly "New Employee Orientation." Additional training/briefings may be scheduled as required by contacting EH&S.
Ladder Safety
This is a one time training requirement for all Creighton University employees who are/may be required to use a ladder in the performance of their duties. This will normally consist of all Physical Plant Personnel and Telephone Maintenance Personnel. Training takes approximately 45 minutes, inclusive of video, presentation of the Ladder Safety Policy, and a question and answer session.
Material Handling (Forklift)
This training will be conducted by qualified/certified trainers. Training is applicable to all university employees who drive or operate material handling equipment and forklifts in the performance of their duties. Training will usually be contracted by qualified EH&S personnel or through the Safety and Health Council of Greater Omaha utilizing "Coaching the Lift Truck Operator Program." Documentation of training will be coordinated by EH&S.
Respiratory Protection
Training is required under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.134. Training is required before an individual is fitted with or required to wear a respirator. All employees who are required to wear respirators in the performance of their duties must take and pass an initial and annual physical examination, inclusive of a Pulmonary Function Test. Employees who are required to wear respirators in the performance of their duties include Physical Plant and EH&S upon request. Training consists of Donning/Doffing of Respirator, Fit Testing, Review of Respiratory Protection Requirements, Type and Selection of Respirators, and Review of Policy and Procedures. Fit testing is a semi-annual requirement, and may be scheduled by contacting EH&S.
